"Kenneth Clark's sumptuous,magisterial,one-man servey of the achievements of bumanistic civilisation is a TV landmark" The daily mail
In 1966 BBC Television embarked on its most ambitious documentary series to date. The eminent art historian Lord Clark was commissioned to write and present an epic examination of Western Eyuopean culture, defining what he considered to be the crucial phases of its development.Civilisation:A personal View by Lord Clark would be more than two years in the making, with filming in over 100 locations across 13 countries. The lavish series was hailed as a masterpiece when it was first transmitted in 1969.
From the fall of the Roman Empire to the Industrial Revolution and beyond,Clark's compelling narrative is accompanied by breathtaking colour photography of Europe's grearest landmarks. This "history of ideas as illustrated by art and music'remains the benchmark for the numerous programmes it inpired.

Ep6结尾的哈姆雷特是点睛之笔,“Imperious Caesar, dead and turn'd into clay, might stop a hole to keep the wind away.”
最后,先生在表示自己保守派的立场后,说道,“I believe that order is better than chaos, creation better than destruction. I prefer gentleness to violence, forgiveness to vendetta. On the whole, I think that knowledge is preferrable than ignorance. And I'm sure that human sympathy is more valuable than ideology. I believe that in spite of recent truimphs in science, men haven't changed much in the last two thousand years. And in consequence, we should still try to learn from history- history is ourselves.”
“It is the lack of confidence ,more than anything else, that kills a civilisation. We can destory ourselves by cynicism and disillusion just as effective as by bombs.”(全程手打听写,可能有出入,但真的很爱里面的每一句话。)

For millennia, art has been used to bring the human and divine together.
The story of religious art is about more than the most majestic and affecting visual images ever made, is about controversy and conflict, danger and risk.
When does the worship of an image, turn into dangerous idolatry? Where does divine glorification end worldly vanity begin? What actually counts as an image of God or of God’s word?
Treading these fast lines, I’ll even show how the defacement of religious art is fraught with its own problems and paradox, and I want to end with what we think of as the western civilization cradle to ask what it is now we worship and how far we still look with the eye of faith.
YouTube上有一条评论说这部纪录片主旨是“Why are white people so awesome?”
community of obedience, community of will
